If you’ve noticed more homeless people walking the streets of Riverside or pitching tents, it’s probably because there are in fact more homeless.  Results are in for Riverside County’s annual homeless count, and they suggest the number of people living on the street countywide has increased by more than 20% over last year. County officials emphasize the count is a one-day snapshot and merely represents the “visible” homeless population — not everyone who lacks a home. But they say the count is an indicator of the overall trend.

On Jan. 29, early-morning volunteers spread out, counting 2,811 homeless people across the county, including 2,045 living on the street and 766 in shelters.

  Mental health also plays a big part in homelessness. Most researchers agree that the connection between homelessness and mental illness is a complicated, two-way relationship. An individual’s mental illness may lead to cognitive and behavioral problems that make it difficult to earn a stable income or to carry out daily activities in ways that encourage stable housing. Several studies have shown, however, that individuals with mental illnesses often find themselves homeless primarily as the result of poverty and a lack of low-income housing. The combination of mental illness and homelessness also can lead to other factors such as increased levels of alcohol and drug abuse and violent victimization that reinforce the connection between health and homelessness.  Homeless encampments can lead to biohazard situations and contamination, that can pose serious health consequences.  Maybe some homeless  set up camp in one of your vacant commercial buildings or behind your commercial building.
