  • Have a safe place for them to stay if you need to leave your home.

Electrical Fire Safety Tips

6/30/2022 (Permalink)

Always Remember to make sure all electrical work in your home is done by a qualified electrician!

Electricity helps make our lives easier. There are times though when we can take its power and its potential for fire-related hazards for granted. Here are a few electrical safety tips to follow to keep your home fire-safe.

When it comes to Appliances

  • Always plug major appliances, like refrigerators, stoves, washers and dryers, directly into a wall outlet.
  • Never use an extension cord with a major appliance — it can easily overheat and start a fire.
  • Use light bulbs that match the recommended wattage on the lamp or fixture.

When if comes to Outlets

  • Do not overload wall outlet
  • Insert plugs fully into outlets
  • Install tamper-resistant electrical outlets if you have young children

When it comes to Extension Cords, Power Strips and Surge Protector

  • Replace worn, old or damaged extension cords right away
  • Use extension cords for temporary purposes only
  • Use power strips that have internal overload protection

Imagine a scenario where your Riverside home suffers a small degree of fire damage. Picture plugging in an electric kettle with the intention of brewing tea. You hear the popping and smell the burning of plastic and act quickly, extinguishing the small blaze before it gets out of control.

If the Fire is Small, Do I Need to Call For Remediation Services?

Even small fires can leave behind an impressive amount of damage that could be hard for a non-professional to clean. For example, a small fire in your kitchen could leave behind:

What Should Homeowners Expect During Kitchen Fire Restoration Services?

3/16/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO fire damage restoration team has the experience and manpower for any size disaster.

SERVPRO Technicians Have Decades of Fire Damage Cleanup Experience

A  kitchen with fire damage needs special attention for the best outcome. A large number of actions need to occur to ensure the kitchen is safe and clean for food preparation and meals again.

SERVPRO technicians know that fire restoration services in kitchens mean that a certain amount of controlled demolition may be necessary. Common actions the techs frequently perform are:

  • Removal of ruined food items in cabinets, freezers, and refrigerators
  • Controlled demolition of charred cabinets and walls
  • Cleaning smoke damage from surfaces

Kitchens can harbor a unique type of smoke residue caused by a kind of fire known as a protein fire. This type of damage typically happens when a protein-based food catches on fire in a pan or oven. The result is not the regular covering of dark soot, but a nearly invisible, but highly pungent greasy residue.

This residue needs a solvent-based cleaner to release the grip it has on surfaces. SERVPRO techs have cleaning agents that will not mar surfaces but can clean away all types of smoke damage, including protein residues. Once the damage from the smoke gets cleaned, the odors in the kitchen typically diminish.

Odor control is usually the final step of the housefire cleanup job. The technicians make sure that no lingering smoke odors remain in the kitchen. The technicians can repair walls, ceilings and reinstall cabinets as needed. Installation of flooring is no problem no matter if it is tile, hardwood, or another type. Whatever actions need to occur to return the kitchen to a like-new status get done.

SERVPRO of Riverside City brings fire restoration services to  properties when needed and is available 24/7. Call us today (951)222-2224

Soot Cleanup in Residences

2/15/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot residues often need professional restoration. Don't DIY! SERVPRO is available 24/7 for fire damage restoration.

After a Fire, Cleaning Up Soot and Smoke Damage Deposits in Riverside Homes is Critical

Fires are among the most devastating situations that property owners might face in their lifetime. With the severity of these emergencies and how much of your home can be damaged by soot in smoke residues, we have specific approaches to eliminate this smoke damage where it is found.

Surface Cleaning Strategies for Manageable Soils

Getting fire and smoke cleanup in Riverside homes started means choosing the ideal approach to remove soot and smoke residues from surfaces. Often, surface treatments with chemical sponges can be effective in high heat fire damage scenarios. However, thicker residues that are more challenging to remove might also require wet cleaning approaches. We utilize a range of products to accomplish this, including:

  • Alkaline cleaners
  • Solvents
  • Detergents
  • Water-based solutions
  • Aggressive Cleaning with Machines

It can also be possible to utilize machines like our media blasters with specific materials such as walnuts, baking soda, and sponges to clean surface soils that are more challenging than typical wet or dry cleaning approaches can resolve. Despite being an aggressive cleaning measure, these efforts can often be critical in protecting and preserving underlying substrates impacted by soot damage.

Controlled Demolition as a Final Resort

Removing building materials is rarely the first step that our professionals wish to take after fire damage. We carefully assess the salvageability of multiple exposed surfaces and contents to clean and restore them if possible. When these efforts have been exhausted, it is worth considering removing damaged portions of structural materials and replacing them.

It is easy to see multiple possible soot cleaning strategies available for fire-damaged homes in Riverside. Despite how rapidly fire damage can occur in apartments and houses, our experienced fire restoration professionals can respond fast to help when it is needed most. How to Minimize the Risk of a Kitchen Fire

    12/28/2021 (Permalink)

Always take notice of potential fire risks in the kitchen

Most of us that are at home in our kitchens, we hardly take any notice of any potential risk or problems. Besides burning dinner or having the potatoes boil over, we assume we are fine.

But fires happen in kitchens all the time. In fact, well over half of the fires that start in our homes start in the kitchen. Clearly, we need to be more aware. People can get seriously injured, our homes get damaged or destroyed, and people lose their lives.

How to Minimize the Risk of a Kitchen Fire

There are so many easy ways to make sure we are safe while using our kitchens. So many fires are completely preventable.

    Check Smoke Detectors

These are supposed to be checked at least semi-annually for the entire household. Change the batteries in all your detectors and check to make sure they are working.

    Don’t Leave Cooking Unattended

It only takes a second for something to go wrong when you are cooking. If you need to leave the room, even for a minute, turn the burners off. Elements won’t cool down very fast, so food will continue to cook, and gas stoves will heat right back up again.

We live in an age where we are constantly distracted. Phones and gadgets can all be attention-grabbers. If you use an electronic device for your recipes, shut off email, texts, and other messaging applications so you won’t lose yourself in the banality.

    Keep Area Clean

Grease from cooking can build up on the stovetop, above the stove, and on the backsplash. Wipe these down after each use or at the end of the day. Spilled or dropped food items or liquids can start a fire in seconds, whether you are in the room or not.

Remove things like potholders, tea towels, paper towels, cookbooks, aprons, and the like from coming in contact with the flame, the hot pot, or the burner. These can ignite in a flash and they crumble and bits can go everywhere, starting a larger fire.

Remove all packaging right away from the food you open, the wrappers, the grocery bags, and put them in the garbage. Make sure nothing was spilled from them when they were opened.

    Wear Appropriate Clothing

Avoid wearing long floppy sleeves with wide wrists, clothing that flows out or can get caught on knobs, handles or pot handles, and tie your hair back. Always use oven mitts or a potholder when touching hot lids or handles. Wear an apron and make sure your feet are covered and comfortable.

    Keep Kids Away

Many kids are eager to help out in the kitchen. Give them a task they can safely do and make sure they are seated away from the stove. Always educate them on kitchen safety, heat, knives, appliances, everything.

They can get in and get underfoot, as can the family dog or cat. They are all interested when there is food being prepared. Be aware of where they are to prevent accidents from happening.

    Keep a Fire Extinguisher

You should always have a fire extinguisher handy. A small one in the kitchen can save your kitchen and save lives. Baking soda, a lid, and education will help you if you know how to use them, and when.

How To Prepare for and Choose New Smoke Detectors

    12/15/2021 (Permalink)

Update safety equipment in your home on a regular basis.

A key component in maintaining your home involves updating safety equipment on a regular basis. After installation, it is easy to forget about that smoke alarm in the kitchen or bedroom. However, keep in mind these devices may no longer work effectively. The following pointers outline how to prepare for and choose new smoke detectors.

    1. Scope Out Your Space: When it's time for those old alarms to retire, make sure you've revisited the rooms in your home to best assess where new alarms should go. Today's many flammable household materials make the average home susceptible to fires, so add a smoke detector to your shopping list for the kitchen, bedrooms, and every level of the house. Also, be sure to estimate the size of each room as you may need multiple detectors on each floor.
    1. Know the Ropes: Since fires can spread in a matter of seconds, you'll want to consider which alarms have the most reliable detection. There are three general types of smoke detectors: ionization alarms, photoelectric alarms, and dual-sensor alarms. Ionization detectors are usually best for detecting smaller smoke particles that can lead to quick fires. Photoelectric alarms are better at identifying electrical fires or fires spreading from bedding or drapes. Dual-sensor detectors might be more costly than other options, but some fire safety professionals claim these alarms work best as a whole.
    1. Read the Labels: You may have crossed off all the above steps on your checklist while shopping for the right smoke alarm for your home, but have you checked the product labels? One way you can ensure you've chosen a reliable device is by looking for a "UL" logo on the packaging, manual, or detector itself. An Underwriters Laboratories label confirms that your device has been through proper testing and received appropriate safety certifications.

Following these tips can help you leave the stress behind when choosing a smoke alarm. Assess the size of your home and pay attention to the details and fine print of alarms to make sure the one you select is reliable.

    Celebrate Safely This Holiday Season

    12/2/2021 (Permalink)

Local SERVPRO fire restoration specialists say to use common sense and caution to help control risk of holiday season home fires!

In a year when large holiday gatherings may not be possible, fire damage restoration specialists at SERVPRO of East Riverside City say to focus on family decorating traditions and more intimate celebrations may take on extra significance. It is as important to keep safety top of mind with a small family gathering as it is with a large holiday party. We all enjoy bringing the glow of the holiday season to our homes with Christmas trees or menorahs and candlelight, but these statistics from the U.S. Fire Administration show how easy it is for home decorating to turn into a home disaster.

  • The top three days for home candle fires are Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve.
  • More than half of the home decoration fires in December are started by candles.
  • A heat source too close to the Christmas tree causes one in every four winter fires.
  • On average, one of every 52 reported home Christmas tree fires resulted in death.
  • In addition to exercising caution with candles and heat sources, it is important to follow manufacturers’ guidelines for holiday lighting. According to the National Fire Protection Association, electrical distribution, or lighting equipment was involved in 44% of home Christmas tree fires. Though Christmas tree fires may not be common, they can be devastating to more than the house itself. They can destroy irreplaceable photos, mementos, and family heirlooms and even cost lives. To help keep your holidays bright and your home and family safe, use common sense with candles and tree placement and follow these important home decorating guidelines.

  • Only use decorations that are flame-retardant or not flammable.
  • Check holiday lights each year for frayed wires or excessive wear.
  • Don’t link more than three strands of holiday lights.
  • In a year when so many of the things we take for granted have changed, we know people will still come together – in person or virtually – to celebrate family and holiday traditions. Stay safe’ has become a common expression in the context of public health, but this holiday season, we urge all Riverside home and business owners to think about ‘staying safe’ in their homes as they prepare for and enjoy the holiday season.

How to Put Out an Electrical Fire

    10/22/2021 (Permalink)

Electricity is an essential part of life. From lights to heating systems to TV’s, it provides the energy for most powered objects in a home. Electricity is pretty much in almost every home, but it can also be extremely dangerous if the proper maintenance is not done. According to the National Fire Protection Association, electrical failures or malfunctions are the second leading cause of home fires in the united states. Electrical failures and malfunctions also accounted for the highest share of deaths and direct property damage. Always check to see if there is any frayed wires, and replace old or damage cords immediately.  If an appliance has a three prong plug, never force it into a two slot outlet or extension cord.

If an electrical fire were to break out in your home, here are actions that you should do immediately:

Cut off the Electricity – If the device that is causing the fire is found and you can safely reach the cord, unplug it.

Add Sodium Bicarbonate – If the fire is small, you may put it out by pouring baking soda on it.

Don’t Use Water – Using water to put out an electrical fire can put you at risk for being shocked or electrocuted because water is a natural conductor of electricity. Water also may cause the fire to spread by conducting electricity throughout the room and potentially igniting flammable materials.

Remove the Oxygen Source – An electrical fire may also be put out by removing the oxygen source with a heavy blanket or clothing if the fire is small.

Check Your Fire Extinguisher – Electrical fires are considered a Class C Fire, which means that you will need to have an extinguisher that is appropriate for this type of fire. Residential fire extinguishers are often multi-purpose and labeled as ABC, but it is very important to make sure that it is before using it on an electrical fire.

For more information on electrical fires, visit www.ready.gov/home-fires

If your home suffers from an electrical fire, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of East Riverside City. Our team is available 24/7 and will restore your home to pre-fire condition “Like it never even happened.” (951)222-2224  SERVPRO of East Riverside City

    Smell Natural Gas?

    10/4/2021 (Permalink)

Fire prevention week is Oct. 3rd-9th

It's fire prevention week! Many people assume that natural gas explosions are a thing of the past, back when regulations were not as strict as they are today. However, the truth is that gas fires continue to occur at an alarming rate and, sadly, they often result in much more dire consequences than fire damage. You can prevent a gas fire by recognizing the signs of a gas leak.

Determine if Your Home Utilizes Natural Gas

Before you learn the signs of a gas leak, you should determine which aspects of your home use natural gasses. You may be at risk for a gas leak if any of the following appliances use the natural commodity:

  • Oven
  • Hot water heater
  • AC unit
  • Fireplace
  • Dryer
  • Heating system
  • If any of your appliances run on gas, invest in gas detectors, and remain vigilant for signs of a gas leak.

What to Do If You Suspect a Gas Leak

A gas leak can quickly lead to a gas fire which can quickly lead to a gas explosion. For this reason, it is imperative that you recognize the signs of a leak and take proper measures to prevent disaster:

  • Check the stove: If it is safe to do so, walk over to your stove to make sure all the burners are off.
  • Open the doors and windows: If you cannot find the source of the leak, open all the doors and windows to help the gasses escape.
  • Do not flip any switches: A light switch can cause a spark, which can cause an explosion. Keep all the lights off if you suspect a gas leak.
  • Shut off your gas meter: If you do not know where your gas meter is located, now's the time to find it. If you smell gasses, locate the meter, and turn it off.
  • A gas fire can be extremely dangerous. For this reason, the best thing you can do if you suspect a gas leak is to leave your home ASAP and call 911. If a fire does occur, SERVPRO of East Riverside City fire damage cleanup crew can help with the restoration process. Call us today 24 hours 7 days a week! (951)222-2224

Very Common ways That Can Start a house Fire

    9/17/2021 (Permalink)

House fires are more common than you may realize. Using too many extension cords being one of them!

House fires are more common than you may realize, with potential fire starters like dust, laptops and lint traps hiding in plain sight throughout your home, disguised as harmless but can be deadly.

Are you guilty of these bad habits that could start an unexpected fire in your home?

Misusing electric blankets: A warm and cozy electric blanket is a welcome comfort in the winter but, it also poses a potential fire hazard. Never allow pets to snuggle on top and do not pile extra covers over the electric blanket. Excessive heat buildup may lead to fire. Never bend the coils, always keep your blanket at its lowest setting and always turn it off in the morning.

Piling up dirty rags: A wood stain may be the perfect finishing touch on a DIY project, but later, that pile of oil-soaked rags you tossed in the corner could trigger the perfect storm. Those rags are a very real fire hazard if left unattended. The rags could oxidize and spontaneously combust, causing a house fire. Two proper ways to dispose of oily rags are to lay them flat outside to dry or to put them in a metal can filled with water and a tight-fitting lid.

Lingering dryer lint: We're sure you know emptying the lint screen increases your dryer’s efficiency, but did you know that lint is flammable? The combination of lint buildup and excessive heat is a recipe for disaster. Make sure to clean the interior of the dryer frame as well as the dryer vent and exhaust duct regularly to clear away lint and clogs and to reduce the risk of fire.

Letting your laptop overheat: If you own a laptop, you know how hot it can get, leaving your computer on your bed, chair, rug or other soft flammable surface, you increase the risk of restricting airflow through the cooling vents. This can cause your laptop to overheat and possibly catch fire. Keeping your laptop on a desk or table will help prevent fires.

Using too many extension cords: Extension cords are meant to be a temporary response to a lack of electrical outlets; not a permanent solution. The reason why is this: connecting many cords for a significant amount of time causes an overload that will lead to a short circuit - which could start a fire. Hiring a qualified electrician to install additional outlets could help you avoid this problem altogether.

Disregarding dust: Built up dust can be a fire hazard if it collects in and around electrical sockets, electronics and even floor heaters. Vacuuming on a regular basis, especially behind electronics, will significantly reduce the chance of dust particles catching fire.

Improperly storing batteries: Storing 9-volt batteries in your kitchen junk drawer might be putting your home and family at risk. When loose batteries roll around with other metals such as paper clips or screws, the two terminals could short out, possibly generating enough heat to ignite flammables nearby. If storing the batteries in the original package is not an option, place a piece of electrical tape over the terminal to prevent this possibility.

Unwanted guests: Rodents like mice and rats like to chew on electrical wires to control the length of their teeth. Over time, they can remove the sheathing, this leaves the wires exposed. The electrical current travelling through the wire generate heat and if the wire is exposed this could lead to sparks, which in turn could ignite the surrounding surface. Call an exterminator if you suspect you have rodents.

Forgetting the chimney sweep: There are common causes of chimney fires, such as, dead birds, raccoon nests, cracked mortar and built-up creosote. The National Fire Protection Association recommends a professional chimney sweep at least once a year. Also, when building a fire in your fireplace, NEVER light it with kerosene. Always use an approved fire starter.

Overlooking the range hood: Ovens and cook tops are the most common sources of kitchen fires. But range hoods are also a potential threat. Grease builds up over time and can drip down onto the cook top, possibly starting a fire. These flames could easily reach your cabinets and before you know it your kitchen could be engulfed. Regularly clean and maintain your range hood to keep your kitchen out of harm’s way.

Furniture arrangement: Furniture placed too close to a wood stove could spontaneously ignite. Pyrolysis is the chemical decomposition of a combustible item. This occurs when an object is continually exposed to a heat source and dries out. This leading-yet seldom considered cause of fires does not even require a direct flame. It only takes heat and time.

    Stove top fire Safety

    8/31/2021 (Permalink)

Stove top fires can have a very bad outcome!

Frying up some chicken? Or a tasty sweet treat? An employee just mentioned the other day that they were frying up some funnel cakes and the oil got too hot.  There are some interesting things to keep in mind if your cooking catches fire. In most cases this happens when the oil you are heating up gets too hot. We've all been in this situation before, here are some helpful tips!

What you should do if this happens:

    • Fire reacts more to oxygen once started. If you remove the oxygen by putting a lid or cookie sheet over the pot this will help stop the fire. It may take a few minutes, but this is one huge step to stop a fire.
    • You can also use baking soda or salt to put out the fire. Also those who have a fire extinguisher you can use that as well.
    • Turn off the heat, then move the pan to a cool burner.
    • Call 911, if you can not get the fire under control.

    What you NEVER should do:

    • Do not throw water on the pot! If you throw water on the stove this will cause an expansion of the fire.
    • Do not move the pot either. By moving the pot you could cause burns to yourself, those around you or spread the fire.
    • Never use flour this will expand and make the fire worse.

If you need a fire clean up call SERVPRO of East Riverside City, we will make it "Like it never even happened." We specialize in all your textile cleaning, as well as structural cleaning. We are here 24/7 call us today! (951)222-2224  www.SERVPROeastriversidecity.com

Riverside City has had many fires over the years, and we want to do our best to protect our homes, wildlife and lower the risk of injuries. Leave fireworks to the experts, The National Safety Council advises everyone to enjoy fireworks at public displays conducted by professionals, and not to use any fireworks at home, they may be legal but they are not safe.

    • Never allow young children to handle fireworks

    • Never light fireworks indoors or use them near flammable material
    • Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks

    It's Wild Fire Season

    7/26/2021 (Permalink)

    Are You Prepared?

As temperatures rise and fire authorities brace for perhaps the worst wildfire season to date, it is important for you to prepare your property for the potential damage caused by excess smoke and soot.  Wildfires are unplanned fires that burn in natural areas like forests, grasslands or prairies. These dangerous fires spread quickly and can devastate not only wildfire and natural areas, but also communities.  Make sure everyone in your household knows and understands what to do if you need to quickly evacuate.  Consider making plans with friends or family to shelter with them where you may be safer and more comfortable.

Have several ways to receive alerts. Download the FEMA app and receive real-time alerts from the National Weather Service for up to five locations nationwide. Sign up for community alerts in your area and be aware of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA)- which requires no-sign up.

    What should you do?

Do not attempt to remove the smoke and soot by yourself, unless there is a professional present. Hiring a professional is necessary to thoroughly clean your facility of smoke, soot, odors, and any other pollutants. You need knowledgeable environmental experts familiar with various types of combustion by-products, who can clearly define the assessment and testing strategy appropriate for your situation.

    Strengthen your Home

    • Use fire-resistant materials to build, renovate or make repairs.
    • Find an outdoor water source with a hose that can reach any area of your property.
    • Create a fire resistant zone that is free of leaves, debris or flammable materials for at least 30 feet from your home.
    • Designate a room that can be closed off from outside air. Close all doors and windows. Set up a portable air cleaner to keep indoor pollution levels low when smoky conditions exist.
    • You may have to evacuate quickly due to a wildfire. Learn your evacuation routes, practice with household, pets, and identify where you will go.
    • Follow the instructions from local authorities. They will provide the latest recommendations based on the threat to your community and appropriate safety measures.

Because fire damage restoration can take so many forms and stages after an emergency, you need a team of professionals capable of helping you nearly every step of the way. Our SERVPRO of East Riverside team has the experience and extensive training to make fire disasters "Like it never even happened." Give us a call today at (951)222-2224

10 Unexpected Things That Can Start A Fire In Your Home

    7/19/2021 (Permalink)

    Learn These Safety fire Tips

Learn about these common items that can unexpectedly start a fire in your home.

When doing chores or working around the house, your mind probably isn’t fixated on all the little things that could start a fire. Most homeowners know the common causes of house fires, but there are many more than most think of. Here, we will review some of the unexpected things that could start a fire in your home.

    Unexpected Fire Starters

  • Sawdust. Sawdust is highly combustible and should be cleaned up right away. One small spark from an outlet or the chemicals used during woodworking can ignite a sawdust pile.
  • Laptops. When left on a bed or blankets charging for an extended amount of time, laptop batteries can overheat and cause a fire. Many laptops will automatically shut off when batteries are close to overheating, but when left in a pile of flammable materials, it may be too late.
  • Glassware. There have been cases of glassware being left in intense, direct sunlight that causes them to combust or explode. Leaving a candle lit for too long in a glass container can see the same result if it heats up to too high of a temperature. If you notice decorative glassware or candle holders becoming extremely hot, reposition them out of direct sunlight or change the candle holder.
  • Smoking in the garage. Does Uncle Jim take his sneaky cigarette break during the holidays in the garage? Let him know that the garage isn’t a safe place to smoke because of the flammable liquids like gasoline or cleaning supplies that are usually stored there.
  • Oily or greasy rags in the garbage. When you have oily rags, be sure to let them dry out completely before storing or throwing them away. When the flammable oils aren’t able to dissipate and are stuffed in a closed, hot container - they may combust.
  • 9-Volt Batteries. These shouldn’t be left loose in a drawer with other things, because if it touches metal it could spark and cause a fire. Keep them in their packaging to prevent this off-chance fire.
  • Aerosol sprays. Room sprays or beauty products like hair mousse or hair spray can ignite an inferno when exposed to an open flame, especially when they are in use. Aerosol cafes can also pose a danger of exploding when left in a sunny window.
  • Nail polish remover. The acetone in nail polish remover is extremely flammable and the fumes can be enough to ignite a fire. Don’t take off nail polish sitting next to your favorite candle!
  • Hair dryers. Like your dryer vents, the back vent of your hair dryer will accumulate dust and lint over time. When you don’t clear this build up, the heat of your hair dryer or a stray spark can cause the dryer to catch on fire in your hands.
  • Toaster/Toaster ovens. Many toasters have trays underneath them where they catch crumbs to prevent a mess on your countertop. When the traps aren’t cleaned out, the accumulation of crumbs can become a fire hazard.
  • Have you experienced any of these situations?  Have fire damage? Smoke damage?  Call us today 24 hours a day 7 days a week   SERVPRO Of East Riverside  (951)222-2224

How Does SERVPRO Clean Fire and Smoke Damage in Riverside Homes?

    7/6/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO has the experienced technicians with the equipment and expertise your home needs after a fire mishap. Give us a call right away.

Our Team Has Multiple Products and Tools for Fire Damage Restoration in Riverside

Fire and smoke damage can spread quickly in a home, making it vital to get professionals moving swiftly to help. Our SERVPRO roster has fire and smoke restorers and odor control technicians to reach your property fast. We can help with:

  • Fire damage restoration
  • Fire damaged homes
  • Smoke remediation
  • Fire and smoke damage
  • How Does Fire Debris Removal Help Fire Damaged Homes?

One of the first actions for fire damage restoration in Riverside homes is fire debris removal. Addressing the immediate fire and smoke damage in the property can significantly reduce the concentrations of soot particles and smoke damage. Because smoke remediation is a critical phase of fire damage restoration, these emergency services make later cleaning and recovery efforts more efficient and cost-effective. Other emergency services that can also help to reduce structural damage or content damage in your home include:

  • Controlled demolition
  • HEPA air filtration
  • Water extraction
  • How Can Our Professionals Clean Smoke Damage in Riverside?

Air filtration and environmental cleaning are essential to allow a safe workspace for responding technicians on our team. Airborne hazards and contaminants can pose threats to those without the appropriate personal protective equipment. However, these coverings can also impede the speed and efficiency of fire damage restoration practices to follow. We have air scrubbers, HEPA vacuums, and other cleaning processes to overcome pressing smoke damage concerns.

House Fire Clean Up of Soot and Soils

Soot can be one of the most hazardous presences in a home after a fire. Fire damage restoration of these specific threats can involve many steps and stages, specifically removing residues and soils from surfaces. Because of soot particles' carcinogenic and acidic composition, they can permanently damage and stain underlying surfaces and structural materials after prolonged exposure. Our SERVPRO team works with leading removal techniques to protect these building materials and prevent unnecessary controlled demolition when possible. Surface cleaning can be achieved with detergents and solvents that can emulsify or dissolve stubborn soils.

Removing Harsh Odors During Westwood Smoke Remediation

Among the objectives of responding fire damage restoration technicians is removing and neutralizing odors present in the environment. Post-fire damage can overwhelm rooms and areas of your property that preliminary smoke remediation cannot completely address. We have multiple cleaning products that can reduce the concentrations of strong and noxious smells following fire damage, but also rely on effective deodorization instruments in our inventory such as:

  • HEPA filtration products
  • Air scrubbers
  • Hydroxyl generators
  • ULV / thermal foggers
  • Ozone machines
  • Because fire damage restoration can take so many forms and stages after an emergency, you need a team of professionals capable of helping you nearly every step of the way. Electrical Fires Can Cause Extensive Fire Damage to Riverside Properties

    7/1/2021 (Permalink)

Keep an eye on your pets so they don't chew on any electrical cords!

SERVPRO Offers Electrical Fire Damage Restoration Services

Have you experienced a pet who has chewed through an electrical cord?  This is a personal experience from one of our employees.  This cute fluffy pet bunny named FooFoo was adopted without them knowing she had a chewing fixation.  The employee noticed one day that one of her table lamps was not turning on at all, she checked the cord to make sure it was plugged in all the way, and to her shock, the cord literally shocked her, it was all chewed up!  The number one suspect was FooFoo!  Has one of your beloved pets chewed on an electrical cord?  Here are some interesting facts to keep in mind regarding electrical fires.

Statistics from the U.S. Fire Administration indicate that electrical fires account for about 7 percent of all residential fires in the country. This figure becomes much more significant when scaled down to a specific location like Riverside. In most cases, the fire occurs from increased use of lights and heating appliances and usually starts in the bedroom. However, the highest number of fatalities (i.e., injuries and even deaths) come from fires happening in the family room, living room, and den.

When it comes to electrical fires, you cannot afford to be tolerant. You need to contact a locally based fire damage restoration company, such as SERVPRO of East Riverside City, to start the mitigation process as fast as possible. Some electrical fires happen due to appliance failure or problems in house wiring, but many are a result of simple mistakes such as overloading extension cords or electrical outlets. Whatever the case, our IICRC-certified technicians have the tools and expertise to reverse the damage as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Research on fire damage events has shown that faulty wiring is the leading cause of electrical fires in most homes. If your house is at least two decades old, it is highly likely to have faulty wiring behind the walls. Rodents such as rats, mice, and squirrels (and sometimes rabbits), can find their way into these spaces and chew on electrical cords, increasing the risk of a fire disaster.

We also deal with many instances of electrical fire damage resulting from shoddy installation. Home building trades are flooding with professionals who cut corners to save time or money, including electricians. On the other hand, overloading an older electrical system with modern electrical devices can prove to be too overwhelming, leading to damages on your wiring, appliances, and even breaker boxes.

Holiday seasons are associated with the most house fires resulting from misusing extension cords. Generally, an extension cord should only serve as a temporary solution, especially when it comes to plugging several things in at once. Apart from overloading extension cords, using a frayed power cord can also lead to serious fire damage. Indeed, electricity can escape through the holes in the cord and set the surrounding materials ablaze.

In the event of an electrical fire, make sure that everyone is safe and then contact SERVPRO of East Riverside City as quickly as possible to deal with the fire damage. Electrical fires come with many hidden safety hazards, so it is important to allow trained restoration experts to come in and assess the situation.

SERVPRO®  of East Riverside City is here to help you 24/7/365 with any fire damage and restoration issue.

Prevent Fires in Riverside this 4th of July

    6/29/2021 (Permalink)

Lighting fireworks is illegal in the city of riverside, plan with your family to see a professional and safe show

The Most Exciting Fireworks Are Usually Illegal

How do you know if you’re fire works are safe or legal in your area?  In some states consumer fireworks are banned. What about the “safe and sane” novelties like sparklers or noisemakers?  Are these legal in your area?  “Even if you can buy fireworks in your state, the laws could be more complicated than you think. Consumer fireworks have multiple designations, permit requirements and permissible use cases which vary by state. Your city or community may assign stricter rules on top of these. The only way to be sure is to check the laws in your area.” -Safety.com

    Fireworks in Riverside, California

Fireworks are illegal in certain areas of California because each year serious injuries and millions of dollars in property loss occur from wildfires sparked by fireworks. Large grass crops and dry vegetation increase the threat for devastating fires throughout all of California.

Officials in Riverside are raising the alarm about illegal 4th of July fireworks due to extremely dry conditions this year. Sparks from fireworks can land on trees, brush and other vegetation, sparking wildfires.

"We've had 40% less rainfall in the last year, we have a lot of light flashy fuels that will spread fire quickly and put our firefighters in danger and then put our residents and property in danger," said Riverside Fire Chief Michael Moore. From LA List

    Remember fireworks spark fires!

    Know the Law

    • California has zero tolerance for the sale and use of illegal fireworks. Illegal fireworks include:
    • Sky rockets
    • Bottle rockets
    • Roman candles
    • Aerial shells
    • Firecrackers
    • Other fireworks that explode, go into the air, or move on the ground in an uncontrollable manner

The best way to stay safe from fireworks is to not use them. Instead, attend a public fireworks display put on by professionals.  Fireworks are dangerous to people and pets. Using them puts your property at risk.  Hand-held sparklers burn at 1,200 F. Remember, wood ignites at 356 F and burns at 575 F.

Don’t Spark a Fire this Fourth of July!

Where can you view fireworks in Riverside?

Avoid Injury or Death with Smoke Alarms & A Plan

    8/6/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives and, when properly installed, can cut the risk of injury in half.

It is required that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors be installed in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the home. Business owners should consult their local Fire Marshall to ensure that specific building fire codes and smoke detector requirements are met.

Following these recommendations are great, but having proper smoke alarms in place is just the start to protecting your family and property. Having an escape plan allows your family, employees or clients to escape quickly and safely in an emergency situation keeping everyone out of harm’s way.

    Tips on Installation & Maintenance

    • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, including the basement.

    • Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms. Generally, about 10 feet from all cooking appliances.

    • Test your alarms at least once a month using the test button.

    • Replace batteries in all alarms at least once a year. If an alarm “chirps” the battery is low and should be replaced right away.

    • Replace all smoke alarms every 10 years.

    Smoke Alarm Facts

    • 3 out of 5 fire deaths occur in homes where the smoke detectors are not working properly.

    • Smoke alarm failures usually result from missing, disconnected or dead batteries.

    • More than one third (37%) of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present.

    • The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.

    For Business Owners

    • See our blog on SERVPRO Emergency READY Profile for your business.

    • This helps you minimize business interruption by having an immediate plan of action. Knowing what to do and what to expect in advance of an emergency is the key to timely mitigation and can help minimize how water and fire damage can affect your business.

    Common Flammable Household Liquids

    5/25/2020 (Permalink)

You may be aware that there is an abundance of combustible liquids in our homes but you may not know that more than 43,000 home fires are caused by these everyday items each year, resulting in 200 deaths, 2,500 injuries and $469 million in property damage. Here are some of the most common flammable liquids you probably have in your home.

Do not panic – there is little chance you will set your house on fire with these items as long as proper precautions are followed.

    Nail Polish Remover

This every day liquid used by most women is composed of a highly flammable liquid: acetone. A woman in Cypress, Texas was burned when a nearby candle ignited her nail polish remover.

However, this is a rare occurrence. Be mindful of having open flames nearby while doing your nails.

    Rubbing Alcohol

We all have a bottle of rubbing alcohol in our medicine cabinets and we do not see this item as hazardous. If rubbing alcohol is used correctly it poses no harm to you our your house although it is very flammable and vaporizes quickly. Although some have used rubbing alcohol to kill bedbugs by pouring it over the affected fabrics, this is not a good idea! The alcohol then can easily catch fire, especially once placed into the washer or dryer.

    Gasoline, Paint thinner & Turpentine

While it is a good idea to store gasoline in case of an emergency it must be stored properly to avoid fire hazards, along with paint thinner or turpentine.

Approximately 8,000 home fires are started annually due to the improper storage of these flammable materials. Gasoline needs to be stored in an UL-approved container at room temperature away from any heat sources such as a water heater or furnace. Paint thinners and turpentine should be in a tightly sealed container away from heat source.

    Lighter Fluid

Most grill masters are aware of the dangers of lighter fluids and take safety precautions to maintain a controlled burn for the perfect burgers or ribs. So shouldn’t you do the same while storing these items?

    Aerosol Cans

It’s common knowledge that aerosol cans contain flammable propellant. As seen in many movies, a flame mixed with any common aerosol can be turned into a weapon. While this is an exaggeration, it is unwise to leave any aerosol cans near an open flame or in an area where they can overheat, which can lead to the can exploding.

    Kitchen Fire

    5/11/2020 (Permalink)

Having a kitchen full of friends and family adds to the joy of any dinner party, yet it can also be a distraction leading to disaster. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) there were 1,730 home cooking fires started in 2014 on Thanksgiving Day. Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy says, “People are preparing multiple dishes for many guests and there can be plenty of distractions in the home, which can make it all too easy to forget what’s on the stove. That’s when cooking mishaps are most likely to occur.”

Here are some tips to reduce the risk of cooking fires.

    • Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stove top.
    • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food.
    • If you are simmering, baking or roasting food, check it regularly. Using a timer may help you to do this more often. Remain in the kitchen while food is cooking.
    • Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stove top.

What To Do If A Fire Starts

    • Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
    • Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave.
    • If you try to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear path to exit your residence.
    • Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stove top. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
    • For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

Safety considerations for cooking with oil

Oil is a key ingredient found in the majority of today’s kitchens. Whether a recipe calls for frying or sauteing, we include oil in almost all of our daily cooking. When using any of the many oils to prepare your meals--like olive, canola, corn or soybean-- consider the following safety tips when cooking:

    • Always stay in the kitchen when frying on the stove top.
    • Keep an eye on what you fry. If you see wisps of smoke or the oil smells, immediately turn off the burner and/or carefully remove the pan from the burner. Smoke is a danger sign that the oil is too hot.
    • Heat the oil slowly to the temperature you need for frying or sauteing.
    • Add food gently to the pot or pan so the oil does not splatter.
    • Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If you have a fire, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time. Never throw water or use a fire extinguisher on the fire.
    • If the fire does not go out or you don’t feel comfortable sliding a lid over the pan, get everyone out of your home. Call the fire department from outside.

    Holiday Hazards

    5/11/2020 (Permalink)

Candles and lights add a simple yet elegant touch to your home or dinner table during the holidays. However, without the proper precautions this season can go from festive to frightening in an instant.

Did you know December is the peak time of year for home candle fires? Reduce the risk of home fires with the following tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

    1. Keep candles 12" away from anything flammable. Flame-less candles are a great alternative in achieving the same look without the dangers of an open flame.
    2. Use sturdy candle holders that don't easily tip over. Follow the "Three's" rule to have a clean uncluttered look while keeping things safe. The 'Three's' rule is to pair or group your decorations in three's of varying heights, shapes and sizes. This adds interest without cluttering the surface.
    3. Keep your tree, if you have one, 3 ft away from any heat source such as the fireplace, radiator, space heaters, candles or air vents.
    4. Not all holiday lights are for indoor use; double check the instructions for the lights you have before putting them up.
    5. Do not use lights that are worn, have broken cords or have loose bulbs. Yes, it can get expensive buying new lights each year but it's worth your family's safety!
    6. When your tree is dry it's time to get rid of it. Do not leave old trees inside your home, garage or outside leaning against your home or any structure. Check with your local community for safe tree disposal.
    7. Designate one person to properly ensure all candles and lights are properly extinguished and turned off after guests leave or before going to bed.

If disaster does strike during this holiday season, Don't Panic as SERVPRO of East Riverside City is here for you 24-hours a day, 7 days a week.

    Fire Extinguisher ABC's

    5/11/2020 (Permalink)

Most home fires start out small. A variety of factors contribute to a fire spreading from small to large, but with a fire extinguisher handy on each floor of your home – most importantly, one in the kitchen – you can quickly put out a small fire without calling 911.

    Before You Buy

It is important to know that different kinds of fires often require different kinds of fire extinguishers. For the home, the best is an “ABC” dry chemical fire extinguisher. This multipurpose extinguisher is perfect for the home because it can put out the three most common types of home fire. Those are:

Class A: wood and paper fires

Class B: Grease and oil fires

    Class C: electrical fires

It is important to remember that an extinguisher for a class A fire, which is water based, should never be used on a class B grease fire. This will not put out the flame. Rather, it will actually spread the flames.

    PASS

Once you have chosen your fire extinguisher you should read all of the instructions. A typical fire extinguisher contains only about 10 seconds of extinguishing power, so knowing how to operate it ahead of time means nothing goes to waste. All extinguishers work in a similar manner. An easy way to remember how to use one is by memorizing the acronym  PASS

PULL the pin at the top

Before you pull the pin make sure everyone is safely out of the house and that you have the exit behind you to escape safely.

AIM the nozzle at the base of the fire, not at the flames

SQUEEZE the handle to release the extinguishing agent

SWEEP the spray back and forth across the fire until it’s out

Having a fire extinguisher in your home is not enough. Like any other tool it needs to be maintained. Every month, dry chemical extinguishers (like the recommended ABC) needs to be shaken to prevent the powder from settling. If your extinguisher has a pressure gauge, consistently check that it is not too high or too low. Keep the extinguisher clean and wipe off any oil or grease residue that may accumulate from cooking. Never use an old extinguisher with signs of damage such as dents or rust.

Fire Damage is more than what gets burned

    5/4/2020 (Permalink)

Fire damage can be devastating. The damage, however, is not limited to what burns. Smoke from a wildfire can cause damage to homes miles from the flames!

Smoke and soot can be very invasive and may penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

    Smoke and soot facts:

    • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
    • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
    • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

    Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, the professionals at SERVPRO of East Riverside will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage that is contained in your residence. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pre-testing. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

    • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

    • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Weather Watch or Red Flag Warning?

    4/1/2020 (Permalink)

Not all storms are wet and windy. Extreme weather can cause wildfires, which is a deadly storm you do not what to risk playing with. Here in Riverside we are used to Red Flag Warning and Fire Weather Watches almost year round.

A Fire Weather Watch is issued when weather conditions could exist in the next 12-72 hours. A Red Flag Warning is the highest alert. During these times extreme caution is urged by all residents, because a simple spark can cause a major wildfire. A Fire Weather Watch is one level below a warning, but fire danger is still high.

The type of weather patterns that can cause a watch or warning include low relative humidity, strong winds, dry fuels, the possibility of dry lightning strikes, or any combination of the above. Here are a few safety tips from CA.gov.

    Use Equipment Safely

    • Never mow or trim dry grass on a Red Flag Warning Day. (Mow before 10 a.m. on a day when it’s not hot and windy).
    • Never use lawn mowers in dry vegetation.

    Campfire Safety

    • Before starting a campfire, make sure you have a campfire permit and that they are permitted on the land you are visiting.
    • Afterwards, ensure that your campfire is properly extinguished.

    Defensible Space

    • Residents should make sure they have 100 feet of defensible space around all structures.
    • Clear dead weeds and vegetation.
    • Remove leaves and needles from gutters.
    • Trim branches 6 feet from the ground.

    Vehicle

    • Never pull over in dry grass.
    • Ensure trailer chains don't drag on the ground.
    • Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained.
    • Have proper tire pressure to avoid driving on wheel rim.
    • Never let your brake pads wear too thin.

    Other

    • Make sure cigarette butts are properly extinguished.
    • Never burn landscape debris like leaves or branches on NO Burn Days or when it's windy or areas where not allowed.
    • Target shoot only in approved areas, use lead ammunition only, and never at metal targets.
    • Report any suspicious activities to prevent arson. See something - say something

If your home or office is damaged by a wildfire don't panic call SERVPRO of East Riverside City, we will make it "Like it never even happened."
